ChatGPT for Learning: A User Research Project

Overview

This project was completed for my Methods for Understanding Users class. I explored how college students use AI-powered tools, specifically ChatGPT, as part of their study routines. I chose this topic because I personally noticed a growing reliance on AI tools among my peers and wanted to understand how these tools actually fit into students’ workflows. I was especially interested in how AI is shaping study habits, and whether it’s helping or hindering students in the long run.

Motivation

I was motivated to undertake this project because of my own experiences using ChatGPT as a study tool. I noticed that while it could be helpful, there were moments when it felt like a shortcut rather than a true learning aid. This made me curious about how others were using it, whether they had similar experiences, and what kind of outcomes they were seeing.

Research Question

The central research question guiding this study was: How do college students use AI-powered tools like ChatGPT to effectively organize their study notes, enhance their understanding of complex topics, and boost productivity?

This question was designed to explore both the positive and negative aspects of AI tools in the academic environment. I was particularly interested in understanding how students balance the convenience and support provided by these tools with any potential drawbacks, such as ethical concerns or limitations in the technology.

Methodology

I conducted four semi-structured interviews with college students from different majors and academic years. Participants were selected through convenience sampling, mainly classmates and friends who already used ChatGPT in some way for studying. I asked them about:

  • Usage of AI Tools: How students integrate ChatGPT into their study routines, including specific tasks they use it for.
  • Note Organization: How students leverage AI to improve note-taking and organize their study materials.
  • Complex Topics: The effectiveness of ChatGPT in helping students understand difficult or complex subjects.
  • Productivity: How the use of ChatGPT impacts students’ overall productivity and study efficiency.
  • Challenges and Ethical Considerations: Any concerns students have about the use of AI in their academic work.

Interview Questionnaire

I developed a set of questions to guide the interviews, focusing on both the functional use of ChatGPT and students’ personal experiences. Some of the key questions included:

  • General Usage: How often do you use AI tools like ChatGPT for your studies, and for what specific tasks?
  • Note Organization: Can you describe how you use ChatGPT to organize your study notes, and any changes you’ve noticed in your approach to note-taking?
  • Understanding Complex Topics: Can you share an example of a time when ChatGPT helped you understand a difficult concept?
  • Productivity: Do you feel more productive when using ChatGPT? Why or why not?
  • Challenges: Have you faced any limitations or challenges when using AI tools like ChatGPT for your studies? Are there any ethical concerns you have about using AI for academic work?

Findings

The responses from the students provided valuable insights into the advantages and limitations of using AI tools like ChatGPT in an academic setting. Students reported a variety of uses, including:

  • Note Organization: Students said ChatGPT helped them reorganize messy notes by summarizing lecture transcripts or rewriting their class notes into clean outlines. This made it easier to quickly review before exams or assignments. “More effective” in this context meant faster comprehension, improved clarity, and less time spent manually cleaning up or rewriting content.
  • Understanding Complex Topics: Several participants explained that they use ChatGPT to ask follow-up questions or get simplified definitions for dense topics. One student mentioned using it to explain chemistry concepts “like I’m five,” which made the content less intimidating.
  • Productivity: ChatGPT helped students save time by generating flashcards, giving concise summaries of long readings, and explaining confusing material without needing to search through multiple online sources.
  • Challenges and Concerns: Students expressed worries about becoming too reliant on ChatGPT and using it as a crutch instead of engaging with the material deeply. Plagiarism was another concern, some feared that copying answers or summaries directly might cross academic integrity lines, even if unintentional.

Improvements and Feedback

Based on the interviews, students suggested several improvements for AI tools like ChatGPT, including:

  • Enhanced Customization: The ability to tailor responses more specifically to individual study needs or academic disciplines.
  • Greater Integration with Learning Management Systems: More seamless integration between AI tools and platforms like Blackboard or Google Classroom for easier access to course materials.
  • Improved Accuracy: Suggestions for making AI tools more context-aware to avoid misunderstandings or irrelevant answers.

Conclusion

This project provided a comprehensive look at how AI-powered tools, specifically ChatGPT, are being used by college students to enhance their study habits. While there are clear benefits in terms of productivity and note organization, students also face challenges, particularly in terms of ethical concerns and the occasional limitations of AI. The findings suggest that with improvements in accuracy and integration, AI tools could become even more valuable assets in students’ academic journeys.

Visual Representation: Miro Board

In addition to the written analysis, I created a Miro board to visually represent my research process and findings. The board includes:

  • Interview Summaries: Key points from the student interviews, highlighting how they use ChatGPT for studying, organizing notes, and understanding complex topics.
  • Usage Patterns: A diagram that categorizes the different ways students interact with AI tools like ChatGPT, based on their responses to the interview questions.
  • Challenges and Ethical Concerns: A section that outlines the main challenges and ethical considerations raised by students, including over-reliance on AI and concerns about academic integrity.
  • Suggestions for Improvement: Visual representations of the students’ feedback on how AI tools could be enhanced to better serve their academic needs.
